Beoljiji 벌지지 is a sand field formed along the riverside of Muncheon, which runs through Gyeongju, the capital of the Silla kingdom, and contains a tragic story of a loyal servant from the age of King Namul of Silla, called Je-sang and his wife.

King Namul had to send his ten year old third son, Misaheun (or Micheul/Mihae) hostage as a sign of friendship to Wa (ancient Japan).

According to Samguk yusa, the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms, Wa refused to release the prince for thirty years. Je-sang was sent as a special envoy to Wa to rescue the prince who was taken hostage. He left the ship to the enemy country without notifying his wife.

His wife, lately aware of this, chased her husband, but he had already left.

In despair, his wife cried with her legs wide open in the sand field here. Because she knew her husband would be killed in the enemy country. The name "Beoljiji" means "two legs wide open".

Near this sand field was later built a Buddhist temple called Mangdeoksa Temple.
