Head of Buddha

Recently excavated in the Yaksugok Valley in Mt. Namsan, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the head of a Buddha from the Silla period was released to the public today after a simple preservation process.

The Silla Cultural Heritage Research Institute, which unearthed the statue, unveiled it at the research building in Gyeongju City.

In an excavation conducted prior to the maintenance of the historic site of a Buddhist temple, the Buddha's head was found along with a round crystal urna, a spiral or circular dot placed on the forehead of Buddhist images as an auspicious mark, symbolizing a third eye, a small bronze stupa and a bronze statue depicting Buddha immediately after he was born.

At the site where the head was found, a Buddha without a head remains seated.

The head is estimated to belong to the headless Buddha.
