THE PROLOGUE of the PROLOGUE

 

from the CANTERBURY TALES

 

by GEOFFREY CHAUCER( c. 1343 – 25 October 1400) 

 

4월이 감미로운 소나기로 
3월 가뭄을 뿌리까지 꿰뚫고 
생명을 피워내는 그 힘으로 모든 줄기 적셔  
꽃을 피우게 할 때, 
서풍 또한 감미로운 숨결로, 
모든 관목과 들판, 
부드러운 가지에 생기를 불어넣고, 젊은 태양이 
백양궁 자리 반을 달릴 때, 
그리고 자연이 너무도 그들을 격렬하게 흥분시켜 
뜬 눈으로 밤을 지새운 어린 새들이 
노래 부를 때,   
그때 사람들은 순례를 떠나고자 하고   
순례자는 낯선 고장을 찾아가자 하며   
여러군데 널리 알려진 먼 성소로 가자 한다.  
특히 방방곡곡    
잉글랜드에서는 그런 이들이 켄터베리로      
성스럽고 축복 내리는 성자를 찾아나서니 

그들이 나약할 때 도와준 까닭이다. 

 

 

Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote, 
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote, 
And bathed every veyne in swich licóur 
Of which vertú engendred is the flour; 
Whan Zephirus eek with his swete breeth 
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth 
The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne 
Hath in the Ram his halfe cours y-ronne, 
And smale foweles maken melodye, 
That slepen al the nyght with open ye, 
So priketh hem Natúre in hir corages, 
Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages, 
And palmeres for to seken straunge strondes, 
To ferne halwes, kowthe in sondry londes; 
And specially, from every shires ende 
Of Engelond, to Caunterbury they wende, 
The hooly blisful martir for to seke, 
That hem hath holpen whan that they were seeke. 

 

 

Translated in modern English

 

When April with his showers sweet with fruit  
The drought of March has pierced unto the root 
And bathed each vein with liquor that has power  
Th(=to?) generate therein and sire the flower,  
When Zephyr also has, with his sweet breath,  
Quickened agin, in every holt and heath,  
The tender shoots and buds, and the young sun  
Into the Ram one half his course has run,  
And many little birds make melody  
That sleep through all the night with open eye  
(So Nature pricks them on to ramp and rage)-  
Then do folk long to go on pilgrimage,  
And palmers to go seeking out strange strands,  
To distant shrines well known in sundry lands.  
And specially from every shire's end  
Of England thy to Canterbury wend,  
The holy blessed martyr there to seek  
Who helped them when the lay so ill and weak.  

 

영문학에서는 꽤나 저명한 캔터베리 이야기 서문 중에서도 그 서문이어니와, 아래 T. S. Eliot The Waste Land는 그에 대한 패로디다.
