요 약
조선왕조실록에 따르면 조선시대에는 채방사라고 불리는 임시 관리를 파견하여 해당 지역의 지질·자원을 조사하였다. 조선 후기에 들어서는 왕의 명령으로 광무국이라는 전담 부서를 만들어 지질·자원 관련 업무를 수행하였고 이는 대한제국까지 이어졌다. 한일 강제 병합 이후, 일본에 의해 조선총독부 밑에 지질조사소와 연료선광연구소가 1918년과 1922년에 각각 설치되었고, 두 연구소를 통해 한반도 지질·자원 조사가 1945년까지 수행되었다. 두 연구소는 1945년~1948년 미군정 시기 지질광산연구소로 통합되고 1948년에 대한민국 정부의 상공부로 이관됨에 따라 마침내 대한민국이 주체가 된 한반도 지질·자원 조사·연구가 시작되게 되었다.

ABSTRACT: According to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, temporary government officials named ‘Chaebangsa’ were dispatched to investigate geology and mineral resources of the local areas during the Joseon Dynasty. The Bureau of Mine was established by the King Gojong’s command in the last part of the Dynasty, and this institute lasted until the end of the Korean Empire. During the Japanese colonization of Korea, the Geological Survey and the Institute of Fuel and Ore Dressing were established in 1918 and in 1922 respectively, and the two institutes conducted researches on geology and mineral resources of the Korean Peninsula until 1945. During the regime of the United States Army Military Government from 1945 to 1948, the two institutes were merged into Geological Survey & Institute of Mining Technology. After the transfer of the two institutes to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Korea, investigation and researches on geology and mineral resources of the Korean Peninsular could be restarted under the sovereignty of Korea.
