The Monastic site of Geodonsa Temple in Wonju, Gangwondo Province 

原州居頓寺址 원주 거돈사지

A Buddhist temple site from the Silla Era, located in Jeongsan-ri, Buron-myeon, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do. 

Historic site No. 168. 

Believed to have been founded in the Unified Silla dynasty era, the temple reached its heyday during the early Goryeo Dynasty. It is not known when the temple was abolished. 

There are monuments including a three stone stupa for Shakyamuni, a tomb-stupa of Wongong, a famous Buddhist monk of the early Goryeo Dynasty, and various building sites.  

In the center of the main Shakyamuni hall, there is a granite stone pedestal about 2m high, and in front of the hall is a three-storied stone stupa designated as Treasure No. 750. 

Located about 50 meters north of the stupa, the Wongong's monument was erected in 1025, the 16th year of King Hyunjong's reign of the Goryeo Dynasty. 

Another stupa stands about 60 meters west of the monument. The stone sculpture is Wongong's tomb, the place where his sariras were buried. But the original stupa was moved to a Japanese house in Seoul during the Japanese colonial period and then moved to Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1948 and as of today stored in the National Museum of Korea, Seoul. The monument now standing on the spot is a replica of the original.
