‘Squid Game’ Makes SAG Awards History: First Foreign-Language TV Nominee
All signs are pointing to "Squid Game" being a major Emmy contender later this year.

Netflix’s blockbuster original show “Squid Game” has made history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards by becoming the first non-English-language series and first Korean series to score a nomination.

South Korean entertainment has made great strides at the SAG Awards over the last few years.

Bong Joon Ho’s drama film “Parasite” won the 2020 SAG Award for cast in a motion picture, becoming the first non-English-language film ensemble to win the top prize.

At last year’s SAG Awards, “Minari” favorite Youn Yuh-jung became the first Korean actress to ever win the supporting prize.

With major nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards, “Squid Game” is positioning itself as a major Emmy contender later this year.

‘Squid Game’s Team Amazed By Multiple SAG Award Nominations: “Happiest Moment Since Creation”

Squid Game is starting to show serious awards-season brawn as the Korean Netflix series racked up a historic four SAG Awards nominations Wednesday. It marks the first time a non-English or Korean series has garnered a SAG nomination.

Squid Game took the world by storm after its September 2021 premiere and proceeded to shatter streaming records. It only took the Korean local-language production 17 days for the nine-episode series to become Netflix’s best series debut ever, eventually accruing over 3 billion minutes streamed and reaching over 142 million households according to Nielsen.

The grim survival drama entrenched itself in the cultural zeitgeist with kids dressing up as the characters for Halloween and Americans obsessing over the Korean childhood games.

Fast forward several months and now Squid Game has bagged four SAG Award nominations, with more award nominations possibly to come.

Today, noms went to Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble, Lee Jung-jae for Outstanding Performance by Male Actor, Jung Ho-yeon for Outstanding Performance by Female Actor, and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

'Squid Game' makes history (again) as the first foreign-language series ever nominated for a SAG award

"Squid Game" has become the first foreign-language series and first Korean series nominated for a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award, a representative for SAG confirmed to Insider.

The Korean series about a death-game competition became a pop culture sensation in 2021, with costumes from the show being used for protests, Youtubers and other groups pledging to recreate the games in real life, and new memes and Tiktok trends inspired by the games inside the show popping up all over social media.

Now the Netflix series, which had already broken records to become the most-watched series on the platform, has been nominated for four awards at the upcoming 28th annual SAG Awards.

"Squid Game" was nominated in two ensemble categories: best stunt ensemble in a television series and best ensemble performance in a drama series.

Stars Lee Jung-Jae, who played the series protagonist Seong Gi-hun, and Jung Ho-yeon, who played North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok, were also nominated for individual male and female in a drama series acting awards.

‘CODA,’ ‘Squid Game’ Make SAG Awards Nominations History
Nonwhite or disabled actors were sprinkled throughout the honorees announced on Wednesday.

In television, Squid Game becomes the first non-English series and first Korean series to earn a nomination for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama (its stunt ensemble has also received a nomination for action performance).

Previously, only three projects with completely or majority Asian casts have been recognized, all on the film side: Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, Parasite in 2020 and Minari last year.

Parasite (which won) was also the first Korean project to receive a nomination, though its individual performers were snubbed across the board that award season.

This time, Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae and Jung Hoyeon now add SAG Award nominations for male and female actor, respectively, to its shelf of individual honors (including a Golden Globe win for their castmate O Yeong-su over the weekend).

Lee is the first male actor from Asia and Korea to receive an individual SAG nomination, and the second of Asian descent (following Darren Criss in 2019) to receive one on the TV side.

In her acting debut, Jung is the second actress of Asian as well as Korean descent to do the same. The first was Sandra Oh, who earns her third career nomination this year, this time in the comedy category for The Chair.

‘Squid Game’ makes history with Screen Actors Guild Award nominations

“Squid Game” made history Wednesday morning as the first non-English-language TV series and the first Korean series to score a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

The hit Netflix show, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, is nominated for ensemble in a drama series alongside “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Morning Show,” “Succession” and “Yellowstone.”

“Squid Game” stars Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon also landed individual nominations for actor and actress in a drama series, respectively.

In the dystopian drama about debt-ridden people who compete in a series of deadly children’s games for a lofty cash prize, Lee plays earnest father Seong Gi-hun, and Jung makes her acting debut as guarded North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok.

The “Squid Game” milestone comes three years after Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning Korean thriller “Parasite” became the first non-English-language project to win a Screen Actors Guild Award for film ensemble.

Twenty-one years prior, Roberto Benigni’s Oscar-winning Italian drama “Life Is Beautiful” became the first non-English-language project to nab an ensemble nomination.
