A home to the Buddhist culture of Baekje, located in the Mireuksa Temple Site (Historic Site No. 150), Iksan, the Iksan National Museum opens today. 


Expanded and reorganize from the Mireuksaji Museum established by Jeollbuk-do Province in 1997, to preserve and exhibit relics excavated from the Mireuksa Temple Site (미륵사지) conducted by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage over an extended period from 1980 to now and use the Mireuksa Temple Site and Wanggung-ri archeological site (왕궁이유적) inscribed on the world heritage list for educational purposes, the museum is represented by sarira reliquaries discovered while dismantling the Stone Pagoda (National Treasure No. 11) at the Mireuksa Temple Site for restoration in January 2009. 


The museum will house the cultural assets of Northwestern Jeollabuk-do, including more than 23,000 relics from the Miseuksa Temple Site.

Located in the southwest of the Miseuksa Temple Site, the museum is built on two basements and one floor above the ground to protect the surrounding landscape. The total area is 39,795㎡, with the total floor area 10,000㎡ (7,500㎡ in extension + 2,500㎡ in reconstruction).  


The museum focues on Iksan, a Historical Capital. For this purpose, the museum divides the exhibition hall into three sections. Sectons 1 "Historical Background of Iksan" features the place where King Jun of Gojoseon built a new kingdom, a regional center (22 local districts, Dam-ro) in the Woongjin Period of Baekje, King Mu’s strategic development of Iksan, the  capital of Bodeokguk, a kingdom built by the displaced people of Goguryeo, site of Bodeokguk Kingdom, built by the displaced people of Goguryeo, recognized by Gyeon Hwon as the birthplace of Baekje.

Section 2 "Cultural Characteristics of Iksan" is for openness and engagement to new culture or group, southern migration of the King of Gojoseon or King Mu’s strategic development of Iksan, becoming a foundation for new culture or group - Bodeokguk or Later Baekje.


Section 3 "Geographical Background of Iksan" is assigned as a center of transportation, developed waterways such as Geum River and Mangyeong River, a foundation for the cultural development, agricultural development and strategic military location, and aA mountainous region in the Northeast such as Mireuk Mountain.
