East and West Three-story Stone Pagodas at Presumed Yeombulsa Temple Site at Namsan Mountain, Gyeongju

Located at the Donggugok valley of the eastern part of Mt. Namsan, present-day Gyeongju, the capital of Silla, this place is said to have been a Buddhist temple site.

According to Samguk yusa or the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms, a mysterious Buddhist monk in the temple called Pirisa 避里寺 always chanted Amitabha Buddha's prayer. There was no place where the Buddhist monk's chantings could not be heard in all the 170,000 households of the 360 bangs of Seorabal, the capital city of the Silla kingdom, thus people respected the monk. After the monk's death, the Buddhist temple was renamed Yeombulsa, literally chanting temple.

Assumed that it was built in the end of the 7th century or the beginning of the 8th century, all the two stone pagodas had collapsed. They were moved to Bulguksa Station, Gyeongju in 1963 to be used to build a new stupa combined with parts of the three-story stone pagoda at Dojijo-dong.

It was later dismantled in January 2008 for restoration.
