On June 10, the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage (NRIMCH, Director Lee Gwi-young) begins to investigate underwater cultural assets in the central parts of the West Sea including Seocheon, Boryeong, Dangjin.

These regions have been inspected for underwater cultural properties every year since the discovery of an ancient shipwreck off the coast of Taean in 2007.

This year's survey target areas are the waters where local residents reported cultural properties.

Starting from the offshore coast of Taean, where about 40,000 relics and 5 marine vessels have been found, located along the sea route to Gaekyung, the capital of the Goryeo Dynasty, or Hanyang, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty, areas such as Seocheon, Boryeong, Dangjin, Hwaseong, Incheon will be investigated.

The offshore coasts along the central part of the West Sea are rough places where the sinking accident occurred frequently due to the high flow rate and reef, and they are still sea areas where local residents report underwater cultural properties.

This year, the NRIMCH is also planning to investigate the offshore coasts of Incheon Seomeopbeol and Boryeong Sapsi-do Island, where the ancient wrecks and underwater cultural properties are likely to be buried.
