The Han River, which runs through the central part of the Korean peninsula, especially the capital city of Seoul, has undergone drastic changes in the process of modernization.
Before the 1960s, there were several islands along the Han River that runs through Seoul, but since the 1970s, almost all of them have been lost in the development process whereas Yeouido Island has remained.
Jamsildo, Jeojado, and Nanjido Islands were transferred to land.
Along the banks of the Han River, large-scale white sandy beaches developed due to deforestation at that time.
However, with the continuous forest rehabilitation project and the Han River development project since the 1970s, the white sand beaches have almost disappeared.
