Daewang-am 대왕암 大王岩, or the Great King's Rock, about 200m off the coast here, is the undersea tomb of Munmu-wang 문무왕 文武王 ( r. 661~681), the 30th ruler of the Silla Kingdom(57B.C ~ 935).
It is said that the King was cremated in a Buddhist ritual and his ashes buried here according to the King's instruction that he be cremated and buried in the East Sea so that he could become a dragon to protect Shilla, especially from Japan.
This morning, mist was formed over the East Sea near Daewangam.
