지금은 우리 주변에서 도끼나 삽, 칼, 가위 등 다양한 일상생활 도구를 손쉽게 구하여 사용하고 있지만, 구석기시대 사람들은 도구의 선택지가 그리 넓지 않았을 것입니다.

고고학 발굴조사를 통해 확인된 외날찍개는 구석기시대 사람들이 사용한 석기 중 하나로 주변에서 가장 흔하게 구할 수 있는 재료인 돌을 다듬은 것입니다.

그들은 몸돌의 한쪽 면을 잡고 반대쪽을 깨뜨려 날이 선 부분을 직선적으로 만들어 사용했습니다.

주 활동무대는 강가나 바닷가, 동굴이나 바위그늘 등이었으며, 식물의 열매를 채집하거나 동물을 사냥하여 먹을거리를 해결했습니다. 

외날찍개는 이때 필요한 여러 용도인 동물의 가죽을 벗기고 살을 자르거나 뼈를 부러뜨리는 일, 식물의 가지를 끊거나 뿌리를 파내는 일, 나무를 다듬는 일 등에 사용한 것으로 추정됩니다.

제주에서 출토된 외날찍개를 통해 구석기시대의 생활상을 이해할 수 있으며, 당시 한반도에서 제주로 육로를 통해 구석기시대의 문화가 전파된 것을 알 수 있습니다.


Nowadays, we can quickly and easily obtain a great variety of useful hand tools, such as axes, shovels, knives, and scissors.

People in the Paleolithic era (Old Stone Age) had a far smaller range of tools available and fewer ways of making or obtaining them.

The stone tool pictured here was unearthed by archeologists in Jeju and dates back to that era.

These 'choppers' were among the easiest tools to construct and were made from the island's most readily available resource.

The Paleolithic inhabitants of Jeju held one side of the core stone and broke pieces off the opposite side to create a sharp, straight edge.

These people lived along the ocean shore and river banks, finding shelter in caves and rock overhangs.

They collected nuts and berries, hunted for game in the forest, and obtained seafood from the ocean.

It is believed that Paleolithic people used the stone choppers for a variety of tasks, from removing hides, cutting meat, and crushing the bones of game to cutting plant stalks, digging out roots, and shaping wood.

Stone tools discovered on Jeju offer us a view into the lives of ancient peoples and provide evidence of the transmission of culture to Jeju overland through the Korean Peninsula.
