Excavation of King Hyejong's tomb of Goryeo dynasty in Gaesong


(Seoul = Yonhap News) North Korean archaeologists recently unearthed the tomb of King Hyejong (912-945), the second monarch of the Goryeo dynasty in the city of Kaesong, reported the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the state news agency of North Korea on 22nd, Oct.  


The KCNA said, "archaeologists from the National Heritage Protection Bureau and the Archaeological Research Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, together with teachers and students of Songdo College of Education have excavated a tomb in Kaesong and found out that it belongs to King Hyejong, the second ruler of the Goryeo dynasty." 


The whole area of the tomb found on the slope of a mountain at the northern shore of Songdo Reservoir in Kaesong is divided into three tiers, added the KCNA. 


According to the news agency, at the top tier is a 13m diameter, 3m high mound and a grave marking stone, from the middle tier a pair of statues of civil officials was found on the left and right sides respectively, and the bottom tier was a space for rituals. 


"The chamber of the tomb is 4m long, 3.4m wide and 2.2m tall, the largest among the Goryeo royal tombs excavated so far", said the KCNA. 


Also, "during the excavation process, artifacts were found, including a monument carved as '高麗王陵' (Tomb of Goryeo), celadon cupstands with inlaid designs, roof-end tiles with flower designs, and pieces of dragon-shaped decorative ridge-end tiles." 


The news agency reported, "the North Korean Archaeological Society confirmed that the tomb is King Hyejong's by the deliberation and analysis of the tomb's form, location, relics, and historical records", "the excavation of a royal tomb from the early Goryeo dynasty era has important significance in revealing the cultural relationship between Goguryeo and Goryeo dynasties."

(ソウル=聯合ニュース)北朝鮮が最近、開城市で高麗2代惠宗(912~945年)の墓を発掘したと朝鮮中央通信が22日報じた。


通信はこの日、「民族遺産保護局傘下朝鮮民族遺産保存士と社會科學院考古學硏究所の硏究士が松都師範大學敎員、學生たちと一緒に開城市で高麗2代王惠宗の墓を發掘、考證した」と明らかにした。


開城松都貯水池の北岸尾根で発見された墓は、合計3個區劃に分かれていると通信は説明した。


通信によると、最も上區劃は直徑13m、高さ3mの規模の封墳と表識碑があり、中間區劃に左右にそれぞれ1雙の文官像が、下區劃に祭堂跡が確認された。


特に「墓室規模は長さ4m、幅3.4m、高さ2.2mで、これまでに発掘された高麗王陵の中から一番大きい」と紹介した。


また、「発掘過程で「高麗王陵」と刻んだ碑石と靑瓷象嵌盞托? (靑瓷陰刻盞托?)、花紋瓦當、龍の形の鴟尾の部分をはじめとする遺物が発見された」と伝えた。


通信は、北朝鮮考古學會で墓の形式と位置、遺物、歴史資料を審議・分析した結果、このよう確證したと「高麗初期の王陵を発掘したのは、高句麗と高麗の文化的繼承関係を明らかにするうえで重要な意義を持つ」と評価した。

(서울=연합뉴스) 류미나 기자 = 북한이 최근 개성시에서 고려 2대 혜종(912∼945년)의 무덤을 발굴했다고 조선중앙통신이 22일 보도했다.


통신은 이날 "민족유산보호국 산하 조선민족유산보존사와 사회과학원 고고학연구소의 연구사들이 송도사범대학 교원, 학생들과 함께 개성시에서 고려 2대왕 혜종의 무덤을 발굴, 고증했다"고 밝혔다.


개성 송도저수지의 북쪽 기슭 산능선에서 발견된 무덤은 총 3개 구획으로 나뉘어 있다고 통신은 설명했다.


통신에 따르면 가장 윗구획에는 직경 13m, 높이 3m 규모의 봉분과 표식비가 있고, 중간 구획에는 좌우에 각각 1상의 문관상(文官像)이, 아래 구획에는 제당터가 확인됐다.


특히 "무덤칸(묘실) 규모는 길이 4m, 너비 3.4m, 높이 2.2m로서 지금까지 발굴된 고려왕릉들 가운데서 제일 크다"고 소개했다.


또 "발굴 과정에 '高麗王陵'(고려왕릉)이라고 새긴 비석과 청자 새김무늬 잔 받침대, 꽃잎무늬 막새기와, 용 모양의 치미 조각들을 비롯한 유물들이 발견됐다"고 전했다.


통신은 북한 고고학회에서 무덤의 형식과 위치, 유물, 역사기록자료들을 심의·분석한 결과 이같이 확증했다며 "고려 초기의 왕릉을 발굴한 것은 고구려와 고려의 문화적 계승 관계를 밝히는 데서 중요한 의의를 가진다"고 평가했다.

N. Korea says Goryeo Dynasty royal tomb was discovered in Kaesong

   SEOUL, Oct. 22 (Yonhap) -- North Korea said Tuesday that a royal tomb of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) has been found in its border city of Kaesong.

   The mausoleum of Hye Jong, the second king of the Goryeo dynasty, was found by researchers on the ridge of a mountain to the north of the Songdo Reservoir in the city, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

   "Its chamber is 4 meters in length, 3.4 m in width and 2.2 m in height, the biggest one among the unearthed mausoleums of Goryeo kings," it said, adding that the tomb was confirmed as the mausoleum of Hye Jong "through detailed survey of its style, position, relics and historical records." 

   Also found at the mausoleum was a tombstone on which the text "Goryeo King's Mausoleum" was carved, it said. 

   The discovery was part of a broader excavation project under way in the Kaesong area to find historical relics, including mausoleums of Goryeo-era kings, according to the report.
