Continuously repaired later...Changed to earthen wall after Goryeo period
Believed to have been built during the Baekje era, sophisticated stone walls have been found in Gosaburi Fortress (Historic Site No. 494), in Jeong-eup, Jeonbuk Province, Korea.
Archaeologists say this excavation clearly shows that the fortress was built by Baekje, one of the three kingdom of ancient Korea for the first time.

Jeongeup City and the Jeolla Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, a research institute for buried cultural properties, have unearthed the 900㎡ eastern part of the site of South Gate of Gosaburii Fortress located at Gobu-myeon, Jeongeup City, Jeonbuk Province to find traces of walls built by Baekje.
The excavation reveals that encompassing the two peaks at 133 m above sea level, Gohsaburi Fortress was first built during the Baekje era and then used until the Joseon Dynasty in 1765.
During the excavation conducted based on the General Maintenance Plan of Gosaburi Fortress, archaeologists cut the walls to investigate. The Baekje era walls which have been revealed to date, are 45m in length, 3.5m in height and 5.4m in width.

According to historical records, Gosaburi Fortress was used as the eupseong, town wall-fortress of Jeongeup until 1765 during the Joseon Dynasty period.
The Baekje era walls were divided into several sections erected by different groups respectively. In the middle of the walls seperated by the outer and the inner wall were filled with stone and earth. The bottom of the walls was made by digging natural rocks in a terraced manner.
According to archaeologists, the techniques used in Baekje walls are to retract the stones into 3 ~ 5cm inches, stack the stones in the shape of 品, match the faces of the building materials with each other, and allow one stone to engage with six other stones.

Rectangular stones were used more in the inner wall than the outer wall. "The inner and outer walls seem to have been piled up at the same time as the walls." an archaeologist said.
During the Unified Silla period, the walls were repaired due to the accumulation of soil from inside the walls.

Two spillways for water discharge have been found on the walls. Thoses are about 7m in length and about 0.8m in width.
Along the outer wall, three to four lines of wood posts with diameters of 20 to 30 cm have been found. The wooden pillars are presumed to be traces of the facilities that they supported when building the walls.
Transformed into earthen walls during the Goryeo period, the walls were filled with both earth and stone.
