빵빵한 궁디 갖춤 3천 년 전 고대 이란의 두 발 용기

 

장화 신은 고양이도 아니고, 현대적 감각 물씬하지만 놀랍게도 저 분 연세는 대략 3천 살 정도 되신다고 한다. 

소장처인 미국 브르클린박물관 Brooklyn Museum 에서는 Ancient Near Eastern Vessel with Two Feet 라는 제목을 달아놨는데, 두 발 달린 고대 근동 용기 정도라는 뜻이 되겠다. 

대략 기원전 1000~800년 전 점토 Clay로 만들었으며 규격은 18 7/8 x Diam. 7 11/16 in. (48 x 19.5 cm) 라 한다. 가마에 구웠다 해도 몇도 되지는 않을 듯하다.

라 하니, James F. Romano 라는 사람을 추모해 Arthur M. Sackler 재단이 기부한 것이라 한다. 이 새클러라는 사람이 이곳저곳 저런 유물을 잔뜩 기증했는데, 한국과도 일정한 연결점이 있는 것으로 기억한다. 

저 박물관 EGYPTIAN, CLASSICAL, ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN ART 중 CULTURE Ancient Near Eastern 섹션에 전시 중이라고. 

 

 

만든 지역은 북부 이란으로 추정하는 모양이다. 박물관 설명은 이렇다. 

타원형에 거의 자루 모양인 몸통, 뒤집힌 테두리가 있는 다소 길쭉한 목 elongated neck, 비스듬한 어깨에서 목까지 튀어나온 한 쌍 좁은 곡선 손잡이를 갖춘 키가 큰 용기다. 용기 아래쪽은 잘 모델링한 두 개 다리로 나뉜다. 발목 뼈, 각 발 아치 등의 디테일은 절개선 incised lines 이 아닌 모델링한 형태 modeled forms 로 렌더링된다 rendered. 도기 그릇보다는 포도주 또는 waterskin 을 위한 용도로 본다. 이러한 연관성은 의도적인 것으로 보인다. 용기의 가벼운 다공성  porous 질그릇 본체가 물이 측면을 통해 천천히 증발하도록 해서 남은 내용물을 약간 냉각시키기 때문이다.

CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION A tall vessel with an oval, almost bag-like body, a somewhat elongated neck with an everted rim and a pair of narrow curving handles that spring from the oblique shoulder to the neck. The lower portion of the vessel splits into two legs with well-modeled feet. Details such as ankle bones and the arch of each foot are rendered by modeled forms rather than incised lines. The overall effect is that of a wine- or waterskin rather than a ceramic vessel. It is likely that this association was intentional- as the light porous ceramic body of the vessel allows water to evaporate slowly through the sides, thus slightly cooling the remaining contents.
