'둑도, 독도'라 불리다가 '뚝섬'이 되었다.

이 일대는 조선 태조 이성계부터 왕의 사냥 장소로 이용되었다. 그리고 매년 봄 경칩과 가을 상강에 왕이 직접 군대를 사열하거나 출병할 때 이곳에 둑기纛旗(소 꼬리나 꿩 꽁지로 장식한 큰 깃발)를 세우고 둑제纛祭를 지냈다.

실제 섬은 아니었지만 멀리서 보면 한강과 중랑천으로 둘러싸여 마치 섬처럼 보인다고 해서 '둑기를 꽃은 섬'이란 뜻으로 '둑도, 독도'라고 불리다가 '뚝섬, 뚝도'가 되었다.

뚝섬에서 근대 상수도 역사의 서막을 열다
Ttukseom opens the era of modern waterworks

1903년 12월 9일 대한제국의 고종황제가 미국인 콜브란과 보스트윅에게 상수도 시설 및 경영에 관한 특허를 허가하였다.

이 특허권을 양도받은 대한수도회사는 1906년 8월 초 완속여과지 공사를 시작으로 1908년 북도수원지 제1정수장 공사를 마무리했다.

1908년 9월 1일, 12,500㎡/일 규모의 수돗물을 서울 사대문 안과 용산 일대 주민 12만5천명에게 공급한 데서 우리나라 근대 상수도 역사는 출발을 알린다.
 

완속여과지

우리나라 최초의 근대 정수장, 수도박물관으로 거듭나다
수돗물 공급 100주년을 기념해 개관한 서울특별시 수도박물관은 상수도 전문 박물관이다. 우리나라 최초의 근대 정수장인 뚝도수원지 제1정수장 시설물을 기반으로 2008년 4월 24일 개관하였다. 뚝도수원지 제1정수장 송수펌프실과 완속여과지 등은 현재 서울특별시 유형문화재로 지정 보존 중이다.

From 'Dukdo . Dokdo' to 'Tukseom

This location used to be a king's hunting ground since the time of Lee Seong- gye, the first king of the Joseon Dynasty.

Every spring and fall, when the king himself inspected or dispatched troops, they established Dukgi.

Dukgi is a big banner decorated with a cow's tail or a pheasant's tail feather) and oftered a Dukje Dokje(sacriice). Since this place looked like an island surrounded by the Han River and the Jungnangcheon Stream, it was called 'Dokdo, meaning 'Island with Dokgi';  later the its name changed to Ttukseom.


Ttukseom opens the era of modern waterworks

On December 9, 1903, Emperor Gojong gave permission for waterworks construction management to two Americans, CH. Collbran and HR, Bost-wick.

The permit was transferred to the Korean Waterworks Co., which started a construction of slow sand filtration in early August of 1906 and was completed in 1908.

It began to supply water to 125,000 people a day starting September 1, 1908, opening the era of the modern waterworks.



From 'Ttukdo Reservoir Purification Plant 1' to 'Seoul Waterworks Museum'

Seoul Waterworks Museum was opened on April 24, 2008 to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of Seoul Waterworks Supply.

The museum restored the historic waterworks facilities, including the old filtration plant(the main building of the Waterworks Museum), which is the first water production plant in the nation and a 'Slow Sand Filtration building.
