흥남철수작전의 의사 현봉학

현봉학 박사의 동상 건립에 즈음하여

동족상잔의 비극 속에서 피란민 9만 2,000명 이상을 구해 인간의 존엄성과 자유를 지킨 흥남철수작전의 주역 현봉학(1922~2007) 박사는 인류 역사상 최대 민간인 구출 작전의 영웅이다.

현 박사는 세브란스의전(현 연세대학교 의과대학)을 좋업하고 미국에서 임상병리학을 전공한 후 모교 교수로 재직하다 6.25전쟁 때 통역 장교로 참전했다.

미 제10군단장 아몬드 소장은 현 박사와 포니 대령의 설득으로 군수물자 대신 피란민 전원을 태워 1950년 크리스마스의 기적을 만들어냈다.

현 박사의 이 같은 인간 사랑의 정신을 기리는 데 뜻을 같이하는 사람들(연세대학교, 현봉학 박사를 추모하는 모임, 국가보훈처, 해병대사령부)과 많은 이가 힘을 모아 여기에 동상을 세운다.

Dr. Hyun Bong-hak: Korea's Humanitarian Savior

In the midst of the tragic, fratricidal Korean War, Dr. Hyun Bong-hak (1922-2007) was a hero who safeguarded human dignity and freedom by saving more than 92,000 civilian refugees during the Heungnam Evacuation, the largest civilian rescue in human history.

Dr. Hyun graduated from Severance Union Medical College (now Yonsei University College of Medicine) and went to the U.S. to study clinical pathology.

Upon returning to Korea, Dr. Hyun taught at his alma mater until the Korean War broke out in June, 1950.

During the war, he served as a civil affairs officer to Lieutenant General Almond, commander of the U.S. Army X Corps. Persuaded by the moving appeals of Dr. Hyun and U.S. Marine Colonel Edward Forney, Lieutenant General Almond ordered the civilian refugees gathered at the Heungnam port to be loaded onto the ships in lieu of military equipment.

This successful evacuation became known as the Christmas Miracle of 1950. Yonsei University, the Dr. Hyun Bong-hak Commemorative Group, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, the Korea Marine Corps, and many others have come together to commemorate Dr. Hyun's spirit of love towards humanity with this statue.
