1,500 year old Aragaya Deer-horned cup

The Aragaya period deer-horned cup unearthed this year from Tomb No. 45 of Malisan Tumuli, Haman-gun County, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, has been found to be made by combining four seperate parts and joining them.

The Preservation Science Center of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage examined the cup that is believed to have been produced in the 5th or 6th century with X-ray computed tomography (CT) equipment to confirm that the cylindrical horn cup, the upper body, the lower body and the legs were made separately.

The earthenware is 19.3 cm in height, 17.2 cm in length, and 13.8 cm in width. At the time of the excavation, the cup had a broken head and the deer head disappeared, but the head was found during the investigation of the relics.

Archaeologists said, "It doesn't seem to be broken and buried, and it appears to have been damaged by the fall of other artifacts."

The deer-like head is connected to the lower part of the body and covered with the upper part separately.

Its surface was smoothed, and inside the pottery there were traces of hand pressing to increase adhesion to the ground soil.

In addition, the head and neck were filled with soil, but the cylindrical head and the inside of the body were found to have a space to fill the liquid.

Park Jong-seo, a researcher from the Center said, "It is believed that the bottom of the body was made first to support the deer-shaped head, and then the cylindrical head and the upper part of the attached body were connected, and the mounted stand was connected."

The Deer-horned cup was found north of the head of the buried person, along with other stoneware such as house-like, boat-like and lantern-like pottery. whereas in the south, smaller earthenware was excavated.

The No. 45 Tomb has a 9.7 m long, 4 m wide pit with a 6.7 m long and 2.7 m wide wooden-framed chamber.
