North Korean archaeologists discovered about 130 million year ago Mesozoic fossil birds in Sinuiju, North Pyongan Province, North Korea's official Central News Agency reported on the 19th.

These fossils were recently unearthed by paleontological researchers from Geology of Kim Il-Sung University from the lower Cretaceous strata of the Mesozoic era in the Baekto-dong district of Sinuiju, it added.

Choseon Archeopteryx?

Well preserved fossils include the bird's head and toe bones, 11 primary wing feathers, and small feather branches, the agency said.

Archaeologists estimate that this fossil bird could fly based on the shape and structural features of its wing feathers.

North Korea leader Kim Jong-un named the fossil bird 'Baektosae' and instructed it to be displayed at the Natural Museum.

The news agency claimed, "By discovering and verifying new fossil birds from the Mesozoic era, we can more scientifically confirm that Korea is not only the birthplace of mankind, but also the birthplace of birds."

In 1989, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-un's grandfather and the first dictator of modern North Korea, named a fossil bird excavated in Sinuiju the ‘Choseon Archeopteryx’ and "taught" that North Korea was the birthplace of birds. North Korea claims that the fossil bird goes back about 150 million years.
