CALL FOR SESSIONS/PAPERS
1ST CALL FOR SESSIONS

South Korea's National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage (NRIMCH), Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA), is pleased to welcome you to the Fifth Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage to be celebrated in Gwangju, Korea the 14 to 18 of November 2023.

We warmly invite academics and other relevant professionals to submit session proposals.

Researchers are invited to submit a 300-word abstract and session title before November 15th 2022, together with the name of the session organizer, affiliation and email address.

All session abstracts (and subsequent paper and poster abstracts) should be submitted to the APCONF 2023 Panel and Abstracts Coordinators, Elena Perez Alvaro and Carlota Perez Reverte for consideration.

The conference theme is as follows:

“THE OCEAN DECADE CHALLENGES AND THE MARITIME CULTURAL HERITAGE OF ASIA-PACIFIC”

The conference theme mirrors worldwide efforts to discuss current environmental challenges, in the hope that a look into the past may open a window for the future.

To do this, the APConf 5 will have as its main theme the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), a framework to deliver solutions orientated to support a well-functioning ocean.

We share previous voices pointing to underwater cultural heritage as an essential asset to reach the 7 Ocean Decade Outcomes for the Ocean We Want: a clean ocean, a healthy and resilient ocean, a productive ocean, a predicted ocean, a safe ocean, an accessible ocean and an inspiring and engaging ocean.

The Asia-Pacific Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage (APConf) aims to address management and protection strategies of underwater cultural heritage in Asia and the countries of the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the 21st Century, facilitate regional cooperation through the development of academic, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and governmental networks in the Asia-Pacific region, and provide a forum for discussion of new research, as well as technical and ethical issues related to underwater cultural heritage, maritime and underwater archaeology.

A wide range of people involved with underwater cultural heritage are encouraged to participate, including those from universities, government agencies, museums, NGOs, IGOs, the private sector and the community.

Keywords of the conference:

Climate Change, Underwater Archaeology, Coastal Marine Riverine Ecosystems, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Indigenous Studies, Historical Ecology, Sea Level Changes, Paleoclimate, Human Ecodynamics, biocultural, ecocultural

Information for Session Chairs:

Sessions will consist at a minimum of three-to-four presentations.

Chairs are to provide a suitable session abstract of approximately 300 words to appear on the conference website.

They will be responsible for coordinating their session within the conference program including recruitment, evaluation and selection of presenters in coordination with the organizing committee.

Session organizers will be expected to play a role in the conference proceedings publication.

The conference organizing committee can help interested individuals make contact with other potentially suitable organizers or presenters.

Session organizers will be expected to attend the conference in person and to present an individual, or jointly written, paper in their own or another theme or session.

We are particularly keen on receiving session proposals that touch upon one or several keywords of the conference, but we will also accommodate other sessions that focus on topic such as UCH in different regions in Asia-Pacific, UCH Values, Politics, and Law, Nautical Technology, UCH management and so on.

If you have any queries, please contact the Panel and Abstract Submission Coordinators.

Session abstract submission deadline: November 15th, 2022
