Kim Ki-deok, a famous Korean filmmaker, who was the winner of the 2012 Venice Film Festival, died while fighting disease in a hospital at the dawn of the 11th (Korean time) while staying in Latvia, the Russian news agency TASS reported, citing the Latvian online portal Delfi.
The 59-year-old director arrived in the country on Nov. 20, and had been out of contact since Dec. 5.
Director Kim is reportedly planning to purchase a mansion in a resort city in northern Latvia, and obtain a permanent residence in Latvia.
He received the Berlin Film Festival's Best Director Award (Silver Bear Award) in 2004 for 'Samaria', and became the first Korean director in 2012 who won the Golden Lion Award, the highest prize for 'Pieta' at the Venice Film Festival.
However, he was accused of being a perpetrator of 'me too', a sexual violence accusation campaign that started in Hollywood in 2017 and spread to the world. He lost last month after filing a lawsuit against the actress who revealed that had been sexually assaulted by him and the media that reported it.
