The Palace Compound of the Huanbei City-site of the Shang Dynasty, Anyang City, Henan, China
Taken on Oct. 30th, 2008.
The Huanbei Shang city-site 洹北商城 (원북상성) dating back to the Middle Shang period, was discovered in 1999. It is the largest walled Shang city in current archaeological map. The Huanbei site is located north of the Huan River 洹河 in the northern suburb of modern city Anyang 安阳, Henan. About 19 km to the west is the eastern foothill of Taihang Mountains 太行山, to the north the low-relief hill, and to the east and south the broad alluvial floodplain. The general topography of the site is relatively flat, slightly higher in elevation in the northwest than in the southeast. This walled urban site situates immediately northeast of the limit of Yinxu 殷墟, the well-known capital site of Late Shang period, with a slight overlapping.
