白象塔位于瓯海区南白象街道白象村的温瑞塘河之畔，建于1115年(北宋政和五年)。1965年，因塔倾斜经浙江省有关部门批准拆除，并从塔中出土北宋文物1000余件，其中最具特色的是42尊北宋彩塑像。如今的白象塔重建于1992年。

上世纪70年代初，浙江省博物馆向温州博物馆提出调拨两件北宋彩塑代表作品的要求，随后两件彩塑就留在杭州。今年是浙江省博物馆建馆80周年，为此从馆藏10万余件文物中由专家推荐和社会公众投票评选出十大镇馆之宝。上榜的“彩塑泥菩萨立像”高60厘米，菩萨面带微笑合掌立于莲台上。
