여의주를 갖고 노는 두 마리 용

파도가 출렁이는 바다 위에서 두 마리 용이 여의주를 두고 다투고 있습니다. 위에서 내려오는 청룡과 아래에서 올라가는 황룡의 움직임에 구름과 파도의 리듬까지 더해져 한층 역동적인 느낌이 듭니다. 쌍룡이 여의주를 갖고 노는 그림(雙龍戱珠)은 명나라에서 들어온 후, 조선시대 교룡기나 경복궁 근정전 어좌 위 천장, 경복궁 건춘문 위의 천장 그림처럼 왕실의 상징물에 주로 활용되었습니다. 벽옥 여의주를 쫓는 용들의 표정은 험상궂기보다는 익살스러워 서로 장난치는 듯 보입니다.

Two Dragons Playing with a Wish-granting Jewel

In this painting, two dragons are fighting over a wish-granting jewel above a sea with rolling waves. The rhythmic clouds and waves and the movements of the descending blue dragon and ascending yellow dragon create a dynamic sense. Such paintings with iconography of two dragons playing with a wish-granting jewel were imported from Ming China. Afterwards, the iconography was applied mainly to royal emblems like a gyoryonggi flag used during the king’s procession and royal architectural elements, including on the ceiling above the royal seat in Geunjeongjeon Hall at Gyeongbokgung Palace and the ceiling of Geonchunmun Gate at Gyeongbokgung. In this painting, the facial expressions of the two dragons chasing after the jade-green jewel look comical rather than fierce, as if they are playing together.
