Seoul city to cancel year-end bell-ringing ceremony due to COVID-19

For more than half a century, the sound of a bell in Korea has signaled the beginning of the new year. 

 

There is a bell house called Bosingak in Jongno in the center of Seoul. Inside this building was a huge bronze bell that signaled the start and cancellation of curfew since the Joseon Dynasty.

 

Every year since 1953, the year the Korean War ended, the city of Seoul has informed citizens that the New Year has arrived by blasting this bell at the beginning of the new year.

Although it is an event for the citizens of Seoul, its symbolism has spread across the country.

 

Such annual bell ringing event will be canceled after 67 years. 

 

With the spread of the covid-19 virus, the Seoul Metropolitan Government decided not to hold this year's event for social distancing.
