1890년에 시작된 120년 역사를 지닌 유서 깊은 공세리 성지·성당은 충청남도 지정문화재 144호이며, 350여 년이 넘은 다수의 국가 보호수가 있으며, 높은 언덕에 우뚝 서 있는 근대 고딕식 조적조 종교 건물로 그 원형이 비교적 잘 보존되어 있고 수려한 자연 경관과 잘 어우러져 전국에서 가장 아름다운 성당이라는 명성답게 공세리성당만의 독특한 매력과 아름다운 자태를 맘껏 뽐내고 있다.

공세리 성당의 아름다움은 이미 수많은 영화와 드라마를 통해서도 더 잘 알려져 있다.

성당이 위치한 1만여 평의 부지는 성종 9년(1478년)부터 영조 38년(1762년)까지 근 300년 동안 운영되었던 충청도 일대에서 거두어 들인 세곡을 저장하던 공세 창고지인 역사 유적지이기도 하다.

 

공세리 성당이 위치한 이곳은 내포 지방의 입구로써 내포지역은 한국천주교회의 신앙의 못자리라 불릴 만큼 한국 천주교 역사에 중요한 중심지였다.

공세리 성당에는 1801과 1873년 신유, 병인박해 때 이 지역에서 순교하신 32위의 순교자들을 모시고 있는 순교 성지이기에 더욱 경건하고 의미 있는 곳이기도 하다.

공세리성당은 1890년 프랑스 외방선교회 파스키에 신부님에 의해 예산 간양골에서 시작되어 그 후 5년 뒤인 에밀 드비즈(파리외방선교회) 신부님에 의해 지금 이 자리에 자리를 잡게 되었다.

드비즈 신부님은 이곳에서 많은 일들을 하시는데 특이할 만한 업적 중 하나는 우리에게 이명래 고약으로 알려진 바로 그 고약의 원 개발자라는 사실이다. 자신만의 방법으로 고약을 만들어 무료로 나누어주는데 그 비법을 당시 드비즈 신부님을 도와주었던 이명래(요한)에게 전수하여 전국적으로 보급되었기에 공세리 성당은 “이명래 고약의 발원지” 라고 할 수 있다.

 

This historical 120 years old Gongseri Shrine·Catholic Church was founded in 1890. It is designated as a cultural heritage No. 144 of Chungcheongnam-do region with numerous protected trees.

This church is regarded as one of the most beautiful and attractive church in the nation that stands high on the hills with many nurse trees that are more than 350 years old along with well maintained scenic landscape.

The architectural structure of this Gongseri Church is designed and built in modern gothic masonry. This beautiful church is also well publicized by appearing in many movies and TV dramas.

 

The land where the church stands, about 10,000m² in size, is also a historical site where it was used as a storage warehouse for collecting grains paid as tax for over 300 years during the 9th year of the King Sung-Jong (Year 1478), and the 38th year of the King Young-Jo (Year 1762).

Gongseri Catholic Church, located at the entrance of the Nepo area played a very important role and historical value as a starting point of Korean atholic churches and its religious belief.

The shrine is known for the 32 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Sin-Yoo and Byung-In persecution period in 1801 and 1873, which makes the church even more devotional and meaningful.

 

The French missionary priest Pasquier in Ye-San Gan-Yang-Gol first founded the Gongseri Church in 1890, and 5 years later another French missionary priest Emilius Devise established the church in the current location. Emilius Devise's another memorable achievement is that he was the original founder/creator of a salve that is known in Korea as Lee-Myung-Rae's Salve.

He had his unique way of making the salve, which was distributed, to the citizens free of charge. He passed on his
method of making the salve to Myung-Rae Lee (John), who helped him during the period. It was later distributed all over the nation, thus making the church as the origin of the Lee-Myung-Rae's salve.
