[국내 박물관 현황과 연혁] 다부동전적기념관(1)

***  이 기념관은 박물관으로는 등록되지 않았으므로 문서상 족보상으로는 박물관은 아니다.

다만 그 기능이 실상 박물관이라 이 범주에 넣어 살핀다. 보훈처(국가보훈부) 산하 기념관이 대체로 그렇다.

또 한 가지 작년까지 칠곡군이 위탁운영하다 올해부턴 경북도가 위탁한다고 하는데 이 대목은 아직 최종 확인을 하지 못했다. 

6.25 전쟁 분수령을 이루는 격전지 다부동에 그 전과를 기념하고자 세운 이곳은

첫째 냉전시대 산물이며
둘째 그렇기에 정치 이데올로기 선전성이 여타 박물관 미술관 보다 짙고
셋째 건립주체는 국방부 중앙정부지만
넷째 그 운영은 관할 지방자치단체인 칠곡군이 하며
다섯째 전두환시대 때 건립됐다는 점에서

의미 부여가 가능하다.

저런 점들에서 독특한 면이 있는 공립 기념관이다.

현지 입간판이 안내하는 건립내력은 다음과 같다.

다부동전적기념관 Dabudong War Memorial Museum

이곳은 북한 공산주의자들에 의해 저질러진 6-25의 참극으로 인해 조국의 운명이 백척간두에 섰을 때, 한.미연합군이 피로써 막아낸 다부동 혈전의 전장이다.

1950년 8월초 북한군은 제3. 13.15사단 둥 5개 사단 병력을 왜관, 다부동 전선에 집중 투입, 8월 15일까지 대구를 침공할 기세로 발악적인 총 공세를 가해왔다.

이때 국군 제1사단과 제8사단이 주축이 되어 미 제1기병사단 장병들과 밀고 밀리기를 수 십 차례, 아군은 최후의 일각까지 고귀한 생명을 바쳐 처절한 혈투끝에 적의 공세를 분쇄하였다.

그 후에도 북한군은 9월초에 또 다시 낙동강 방어선을 돌파하기 위하여 최후의 공세를 재개 했으나, 아군은 우세한 화력과 과감한 반격으로 9월 중순경에 적의 주력 부대를 섬멸하고 대구-다부동전선을 끝까지 고수, 반격의 보루를 확보하였다.

이 혈전에서 아군은 적 전차 13대 파괴, 적 사상 17,500여명의 대 전과를 거두었으나 아군도 10,000여명의 인적 손실을 입었다.

경찰 또한 낙동강 전투에 15,000여명이 참전하여 그 중 전사자 기록에 있는 197명을 비롯한 수 많은 경찰이 고귀한 생명을 받쳤으며, 당시 경찰의 "대구사수정신"은 6-25전사에 길이 빛나고 있다.

이곳 다부동전적기념관은 그 때 그 현장의 교훈을 알리는 전쟁의 산 교육장으로 활용하기 위해 1981년 11월 30일 국방부에서 건립하여 본 군이 관리를 맡아 오늘에 이르고 있다.

Dabudong War Memorial Museum

Soldiers of the ROK-US alliance defended this historical site during the Korean War.

Most of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice, their life, in defense of the Korean peninsula and the people, whose nation's existence was in jeopardy due to the invasion of the North Korean Communists.

In early August of 1950, five North Korean army divisions, including the Brd, 13th, and 15th, conducted an all-out attack on the Dabudong line in Waegwan in an attempt to seize the city of Daegu before August 15.

The 1st and 8th Division of the ROK Army served as the main force in defense of the Dabudong line.

They fought alongside the US Army's famous 1st Cavalry Division.

A barrage of fire was exchanged between the enemy and our allied troops.

It was only after the enemy was suppressed, and so many lives lost hat the allies were finally able to slow the advancing North Koreans.

The North Korean Army attempted their final attack to break through the defensive line at the Nakdong River in early September.

Fighting was heavy at times, but in mid - September, after so many days of fighting, the allied ROK-US forces annihilated the main force of the enemy with overwhelming `irepower and a daring counterattack. After this, the allied forces begin to prepare yet another counter-offensive in order to protect the Daegu-Dabudong line.

As a result of this bloody battle, the enemy lost 13 tanks and 17,500 men.

The ROK- US allied forces had approximately 10,000 casualties.

Approximately 15,000 Korean National Police officers also participated in the Nakdong River Battle. Confirmed as killed in action were 197 men who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country.

The "spirit of police men defending Daegu" is still today a renowned fact of the Korean War.

The Dabudong War Memorial Museum was opend on Nov. 30, 1981 by the Ministry of National Defense to serve as a reminder of the sacrifice given bymany and to educate the next generation about the tragedy of the Korean War. 

The museum is currently under the management of Chilgok County.
