면신례 免新禮

고된 과거시험을 거친 신규관원, 주로 문과급제자들은 4관, 곧 예문관·성균관·교서관·승문원에 배속되었다. 신규관원을 신래新來라고 불렀는데 이 딱지를 떼는 최종 의식이 면신례이다. 면신免新이란 글자 그대로는 신참을 면한다는 뜻이다. 

여러 부서의 면신례 중 예문관의 그것이 특히 악명 높았다. 50일이 지나도 면신되지 않으면 관원으로 대우받지 못하거나 따돌림을 당했다.

신규 관원은 근무부서 선배에게 인사를 다니고 명함을 돌려야 했는데 자주 문전박대 당했다. 그럼에도 이들은 모든 선배가 허락할 때까지 계속 돌아야했다.

명함을 돌렸으면 장미연薔薇宴·중일연中日宴·허참례許參禮·면신례에 이르기까지 각종 연회 비용을 전부 부담해야 했다. 이 비용이 만만치 않아 전답을 팔아 마련하기도 했다.

연회에서도 온갖 수모가 이어졌다. 벌주를 마시는 일은 기본이요, 기타 온몸에 진흙 바르기, 얼굴에 오물 칠하기, 겨울철 연못에 집어넣기, 한 달 동안 계속 당직 근무하기, 광인狂人 배설물 먹기도 했었다.

이 과정이 끝나야 비로소 면신첩을 받고 정식 관원으로 인정받았다. 율곡 이이는 면신례에서 공손하지 못했다고 파직당한 일도 있으니 그 폐단이 얼마나 극심했는지 엿보기에 충분하다. 그걸 근절하려고 했으나 결국 없어지지 않았다.

Myeonshinrye

 

The new government officials who passed rigorous Gwageo, mostly civil officials, were assigned to four departments (Yemungwan, Seonggyungwan, Gyoseogwan, and Seungmunwon).

The new government officials were called Sillae and the final ritual for graduating from this was called Myeonshinrye.

Among the Myeonsillye of various departments, that of the Yemungwan was especially infamous. If one did not receive Myeonsin even after 50 days, the person would not be treated as an equal official or be ostracized.

New government officials were required to introduce themselves to their seniors of their departments and give their name cards, but they were often repudiated.

Nevertheless, they had to continue making the rounds until all of the seniors accepted them.

After giving their name cards out, they had to pay for all of banquet costs including Jangmiyeon, Jungilyeon, and Heochamrye, until passing Myeonshinrye.

The cost for this was very high and some had to come up with the money for this by selling their farmland. They would also humiliated badly at the banquets.

They would at times have to drink excessively, rub their entire bodies with mud, cover their faces with sewage, soak in the pond during the winter, work for one month straight, and even eat the feces of a madman.

After completing this process and receiving a myeonshincheop, they were finally accepted as an official government official.

Yulgok Yii was dismissed from his position because he was not humble in Myeonshinrye.

Efforts were made to get rid of this because of the numerous evil-doings, but it never disappeared.
