간단히 말해 루브르박물관 소장 기원전 520~510년 무렵 제작 칼로스kalos라는 글자가 있는 Janiform 형태인 아리발로스aryballos라는 고대 그리스 도기로

높이는 11.3센티미터에 지나지 않는 소형이다. 

따라서 이것이 무엇에 쓰는 물건인고를 확정하기 위해서는 세 가지 키워드로 접근해야 한다.

칼로스kalos, 야니폼janiform, 그리고 아리발로스aryballos가 그것이다.

A kalos inscription is a form of epigraph found on Attic vases and graffiti in antiquity, mainly during the Classical period from 550 to 450 BC. The word kalos (καλός) means "beautiful", and in the inscriptions it had an erotic connotation.
 
칼로스 라는 글자는 고대 Attic 꽃병과 낙서에서 발견되는 금석문 한 형태로, 주로 기원전 550년에서 450년 사이 고전 시대에 발견된다. 칼로스(καλός)라는 단어는 "아름답다"는 뜻이며, 비문에는 에로틱한 의미가 있다.

An aryballos (Greek: ἀρύβαλλος; plural aryballoi) was a small spherical or globular flask with a narrow neck used in Ancient Greece. It was used to contain perfume or oil, and is often depicted in vase paintings being used by athletes during bathing.  

아리발로스(그리스어: ἀρύβαλλος; 복수 아리발로이)는 고대 그리스에서 사용된 좁은 목을 지닌 작은 구형 또는 구형 플라스크다. 향수나 기름을 담는 데 사용했으며, 운동선수들이 목욕할 때 사용하는 꽃병 그림에 자주 묘사된다.

결국 저 요상한 도기는 향수병 혹은 기름병이었다.
