조선시대, 특히 그 고고학을 보는 모든 것을 바꾼 원주 변수 묘

 
영원한 동반

1997년 원주변씨 원천군종친회가 경기도 양평군 소재 변수(1447~1524)와 부인 연안김씨 합장묘를 이장하던 중 복식과 목인형·목마형 명기明器 등이 다량 출토되었습니다.

이 유물은 조선 초기의 상·장례 풍습 및 생활상 복원 연구 자료로 가치를 인정받아 2009년 국가민속문화유산으로 지정되었습니다.

국립민속박물관에서는 복식 유물을 기증받고, 목인형·목마형 명기는 기탁받아 보존처리를 했습니다.

목인형과 목마형 명기는 크기가 6~10센티미터(cm)로 매우 작고 조각 기법도 간결하지만 인물의 표정, 동세가 잘 표현되었습니다.
 

특히 머리 및 복식, 악기와 연주 형태 등이 어떤 기록보다도 구체적인데, 대금, 가야금, 비파, 장고를 연주하는 악기연주상의 명기는 실례로서는 최초의 사례입니다. 

변수와 부인 연안김씨의 합장묘에서 부부의 저승 가는 여행길에 동반자가 되어주었던 악기연주상들은 현재 국립민속박물관 상설전시관 3 한국인의 일생에 전시되어 또 다른 슬픔을 위로하고 있습니다.

영원한 이별의 슬픔에도 웃음을 잃지 않는 이들의 연주를 느끼며 위안받으시길 바랍니다.

Eternal Companions

In 1997, in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province, the Prince Woncheon Branch of the Wonju Byeon Clan Association unearthed a large number of grave goods while relocating the joint tomb of Byeon Su (1447-1524) and his wife, Lady Yeonan Kim. These included clothing and wooden human and horse figures, which were later recognized as valuable sources for research on early Joseon society. Their significance in reconstructing early Joseon funeral customs and daily life led to their designation as National Folklore Cultural Heritage in 2009. The National Folk Museum of Korea received the clothing artifacts as a donation and the wooden figures as a deposit, and carried out conservation treatment. 

Although small in size (6-10cm) and simply carved, the figures exhibit remarkable craftsmanship in their facial expressions, gestures, hairstyles, attire, and musical instruments. Among them are wooden musician figures playing the daegeum (transverse flute), gayageum (zither), bipa (Korean lute), and janggo (hourglass drum). These are the earliest tangible examples, providing details more vivid than any written record. 
 

Once companions to Byeon Su and his wife on their journey to the afterlife, these musician figures are now displayed in Gallery 3: Korean Life Passages at the National Folk Museum of Korea, gently consoling the sorrows of those who visit today. May their music, performed with an eternal smile in the face of eternal parting, bring comfort to you.

이것이 발굴된 시점은 내가 문화재 업계 뛰어들기 전이나 그 조사성과는 내가 한창 저 분야에서 투신해 맹렬히 활동하던 무렵이라

저 변수 묘야말로 조선을 보는 내 시각 전체를 흔든 사건이었다는 말을 해 둔다.
