Tombs

A set of accessories including a gilt-bronze coronet, left as they were worn by the deceased at the time of burial has recently been discovered from a Silla dynasty era tomb in Changnyeong-gun County, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, which is believed to have been built 1,500 years ago.

Besides the coronet, a pair of golden earrings, a necklace made of 3-4 rows of indigo glass beads, silver rings, and a silver belt were unearthed, but no shoes were found, the National Institute of Gaya Cultural Heritage said on the 28th.

No. 63 Tomb

These accessories were excavated from the No. 63 tomb in Gyodong Songhyeon-dong Tumuli, a cemetery during the Silla period in the 5th and 6th centuries.

It is believed that there are approximately 250 tombs of the Three Kingdoms period in this area, but most of them have been stolen.

Chamber with stone covers

The No. 63 tomb from which wonderful relics were poured out, has a 640 cm long, 130 cm wide, and 190 cm deep stone chamber inside the earthen mound. The chamber has a north-south axis, the deceased has his head to the south.

Inside the chamber

The chamber is largely divided into three areas; a space for the occupant in the middle, a space for relics only in the north, and a space for two servants in the south.

Considering that the thick ring earrings were found and any large sword was not discovered, the owner of this tomb is highly likely to be a woman, and the person is estimated to be about 155cm tall.

Thick ring earrings are mainly worn by women while large swords are owned by men during the Silla period.

The gilt-bronze coronet, about 21.5 cm high, was fixed by nailing three three-tiered tree branch-shaped ornaments to the border of an about 3 cm wide frame.

On both sides of the frame, decorations made of silver jade and guilt-bronze beads are hanging, and there are cylindrical gold and bronze rods. There were also traces of fabrics believed to a cap under the coronet.

On the silver waist belt, which is 45 cm long, two small swords decorated with silver and the decoration at the end of the belt were found.

In addition, one silver ring came out from the right hand and three silver rings from the left hand, and on the right forearm of the deceased, the silver jade and orange beads connected to the circular gold plate presumed to be a bracelet were identified.

It is presumed that a box-shaped wooden coffin was used concidering traces of wood and brackets were found around the occupant.

Based on human bones such as teeth and part of legs found from the space for servants, two people seem to be buried there.

It seems that there is a high possibility that the servants were placed in a wooden coffin as a large number of brackets were identified in this spacer.
