(Seoul = Yonhap News) A moat has been discovered at the ruins of Sangju-eupseong fortress, built during the Goryeo Dynasty era.

According to the Sangju Museum on the 28th, the excavation of 1,210㎡ of ruins of Sangju-eupseong Fortress in Inbong-dong, Sangju-si for the past two months, the wall was not confirmed, but the moat was found for the first time.

Marked with a ditch on old maps, the The investigated area has been regarded as the site of the moat.

The moat was formed by digging furrows and accumulating stones on both sides of the interior, but most of them were found to be lost due to flood flooding or to be destroyed by transfection during the Japanese colonial period.

Sangju-eupseong is said to have been built for the first time in 1381, the seventh year of King Woo during the Goryeo Dynasty.

The four gates and walls (1,525m long) of the fortress were all damaged in 1912 during the Japanese occupation.

By the excavation the '-' shaped podium in the Joseon Dynasty building has been confirmed and it is estimated that at least five buildings existed during the Joseon era.

In addition, the investigation area was the site of the building of Sangju Foundry Co., Ltd., which was first established in 1928, and many artifacts such as white porcelain and Onggi related to alcohol production were excavated.

Shim Keongbo, Emeritus Professor Hanbat National University said, ""It is of great significance that some of the moats of Sangju-eupseong were identified".

Sangju was where Gyeongsang Gamyeong was during the Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongsang Gamyeong was a government office that oversees the politics, military, administration, and culture of Gyeongsang Province.
