공주 반죽동 일대에서 쏟아져 나온 대통사大通寺

공주 도심서 백제사찰 '대통사'명 기와 잇따라 출토

현재 대통사지로 알려진 공주 도심 반죽동에서 곳곳에서 실시한 소규모 발굴조사에서 이 일대가 '대통사(大通寺)'라는 웅진백제시대 불교사찰이 있던 곳임을 명확히 보여주는 명문기와들이 연이어 출토한다. 

다만 현재까지는 대통사라는 글자가 적힌 기와가 다량으로 수습될 뿐, 절터 흔적이라고 볼 만한 건물터 흔적은 확연하지 아니해서 고고학계에서는 여전히 이 일대가 대통사지였다는 증거가 되기에는 불충분하다고 본다.

이번에 대통사라는 글자 새김 기와를 발굴한 기관에서도 그리 말한다. 

하지만 대통사가 아닌데 무슨 대통사라는 글자를 새긴 기와가 그리 많이 나온단 말인가? 

이렇게 명확한 증거가 연이어 나오는 데도, 이런 명확한 증거 앞에서도 왜 저들은 저리 주저하는 것일까?

이런 발굴이 있기 전까지 고고학계에서는 당간지주가 서 있는 이곳을 대통사지가 아니라고 단언했다. 누가 그리했는가? 이곳을 발굴한 고고학도들이 그리 말했다. 

찔끔 발굴하고는 제민천이 주변에 흐르는 이 대통사지 일대에는 아무런 문화층이 없으며, 설혹 문화층이 있었다 해도 홍수에 다 휩쓰려 갔다 했다. 그리하여 아무것도 없다고 했다. 당간지주는 후대 어느 때인가 다른 곳에서 옮겨온 것이라는 주장도 서슴지 아니했다. 

발굴도 제대로 한 적도 없고 문화층을 제대로 확인한 적도 없다. 이 일대는 최근 발굴조사 결과 기와무지가 곳곳에서 쏟아져 나온다. 기와무지만 나오고 건물터가 안보인다 해서 절터가 아니라고 한다. 

이런 명확한 증거 말고 무엇이 더 필요하단 말인가? 

'Daetongsa 大通寺' Tile

(Seoul = Yonhap News) = The roof tiles with the inscription of 'Daetongsa 大通寺' , built during the Woongjin (Gongju) Baekje period (475~536 AD), have been discovered again this year following last year in downtown Gongju City, which was called Ungjin in the Baekje era and the secong capital of the kingdom.  

Archaeologists from the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture conducted an excavation survey at 176 Gongju-dong, Gongju-dong, to find the tiles with 'Daegtong 大通', 'Daetongsa 大通寺', 'Daetongjisa 大通之寺' printed on, goblin patterned tiles, and lotus-patterned convex tiles.

The 'Daetongsa 大通寺' tiles was discovered during last year's excavation of a housing site at nearby Dakdong-dong of the same downtown Gongju area. About 30 meters away from the site surveyed this year by the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture, was found tiles with part of the letters of 'Daetongsa 大通寺' and lattice-patterned bricks that are almost the same as the ones used at the tomb of King Muryeong.

The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation also said that it has found  'Daetongsa 大通寺' tiles at 205-1 Dakdong-dong, adjecent to the sites. 

A Buddhist temple built by King Seongwang of Baekje ( who reigned the kingdom from 523 to 554), Daetongsa is known as one of the oldest temples during the Three Kingdoms period, of which the construction date and location are known. 

Only flagpole supports remain in the place known as the historic site of the temple, but its exact location has been unknown. 

A researcher from the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture said, "we found out that there is a Baekje cultural layer under the cultural layer of the Unified Silla era and have discovered  'Daetongsa 大通寺' tiles." "but there are no traces of buildings from the Baekje Cultural layer that can be associated with the temple yet."
