Thousand-armed or Hedgehog Avalokiteshvara?

어제인가 국립중앙박물관 '대고려전' 출품작 중 천수관음 이야기를 하면서, 나는 기회가 닿으면, 프랑스 파리 소재 동양전문박물관인 기메박물관 소장 '진짜 천수관음'을 소개하겠다고 말한 바 있다. 진짜라고 하는 까닭은 천수관음은 팔이 천 개인 관음을 말하지만, 여러 이유로 실제 그것을 구상할 때는 고작 손이라고 해 봐야 마흔개 혹은 마흔두개에 지나지 않지만, 이건 진짜로 팔 천개를 만들고자 한 까닭이다. 물론 이것도 실제 팔은 갯수 천 개는 되진 않겠지만, 마흔개 어간으로 깔짝깔짝 대면서 천수관음입네 하는 다른 것들을 압도하고 비웃는다. 

그렇다면 이 천수관음 정체는 어떠한가? 박물관 설명문은 이렇다.

팔 천 개를 지닌 관음으로, 생산지는 베트남, 제작시기는 18세기 후엽 내지 19세기 초엽이라 하며, 재질은 건칠과 금칠을 한 목재라 한다. 주칠과 황금을 어떤 방식으로 칠했는지 나한테는 묻지 마라. Don Gustave Dumoutier, 1882는 아마 구스타베 어쩌고 하는 사람이 기증한 1882년 기증한 것이라는 뜻일 듯하다.

뭐 이 정도는 되어야 천수관음이라 하지 않겠는가?

L'iconographie de celui ou celle qui incarne la vertu bouddhique de la Compassion infinie (Avalokiteshvara) a connu au Vietnam un engouement particulier aux 17e et 18 siècles,dans des monastères bouddhiques d'origine royale des environs de Hanoi. Là, une place particulière pouvait être accordée à une forme très spectaculaire de ce bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, « celle qui a mille yeux et mille mains ». Ici, une couche de laque d'or lui confère une dimension cosmique très spectaculaire. 

The iconography of the one who embodies the Buddhist virtue of Infinite Compassion (Avalokiteshvara) was particularly popular in Vietnam in the 17th and 18th centuries, in Buddhist monasteries of royal origin around Hanoi. There, a special place could be given to a very spectacular form of this bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, "the one who has a thousand eyes and a thousand hands". Here, a layer of gold lacquer gives it a very spectacular cosmic dimension. 

뭐 이 정도면 이 천수관음, 고스도치관음이라 해야지 않겠는가?
