Two pairs of gilt bronze shoes, each excavated from a tomb belonging to the local ruling class during the era of Baekje, one of the ancient kingdoms of the Korean Peninsula, from the 5th or 6th century, are designated as Treasures of Korea.
Excavated from the Bongdeok-ri No. 1 Tomb in Gochang-gun County, Jeollabuk-do Province, and Jeongchon Tomb in Naju City, Jeollanam-do Province respectively, the shoes are in perfect condition, inform the funeral customs of the time, and are valuable relics that testify to the metal craft technology of the time.
The Bongdeok-ri shoes, whose overall shape resembles a boat, have colorful patterns such as dragons, imaginary animals in the shape of birds on a human face, paired birds, and lotus flowers. each 1.7 centimeters high, were put on the bottom of the shoes, and silk fabric was added to the inside.
The shoes discovered at Jeongchon Tomb in 2014 is characterized by a dragon head ornament attached to its toe.
As a result of analysis of human bones confirmed together, it is estimated that the person wearing these shoes was a woman in her 40s. These shoes, made of four thin sheets of guilt bronze plate with small nails, have patterns such as dragons, strange animals, and lotus flowers.
