A kiln used to bake pottery during the Bihwa-gaya era has been excavated at Changnyeong-gun County, Gyeongsangnam-do Province.

Archaeologists from the Foundation of East Asia Cultural Property Institute have discovered a kiln, a pit for collecting soil for making earthenware, a pit for dumping waste generated from the kiln operation, and a pit functioning as a drainage channel at the area of san 78, Toegcheon-ri, Changnyeong-eup, Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do.

The kiln is 15m long, 2.3m wide and 2.3m deep, which is the largest of the kilns found to date.

The kiln's internal investigation revealed that there were more than 10 earthenware production processes, and traces of repairing the walls were also visible on the ceiling of the kiln.

The main excavated relics are large jars,  brazier-like pedestals of earthenware and short neck jars.

Based on the excavated relics and kiln structure, and its size, the kiln is considered a facility for professional baking of large jars, and the operation period is estimated to be from the late 4th to early 5th centuries.

Bihwagaya is a small country of the Gaya Alliance based on the present Changnyeong-gun area and is considered to be subordinated to Silla during the reign of Jinheung of Silla. Since then the center had been called Bijabeol.
