코톨드 가문은 본래 프랑스에서 와인 유통을 했지만 종교박해를 피해 17세기말 런던으로 와서 은 세공업(silversmith)을, 18세기말에는 실크 직조로 업종을 바꾸었다.
계속 사업을 확장하여 20세기에 Courtaulds Ltd.를 설립하면서 미술학교와 갤러리를 만들게 된다.
지금은 그 회사들이 미국 소유로 바뀌었지만 학교와 박물관은 남았다.
