The first issue of “NRICH”published
- English magazine published to share the latest research achievements of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage -

 

The National Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH, Director-General JI Byongmok) under Cultural Heritage Administration(CHA) published the first issue of the English magazine "NRICH" on November 30th to share the latest news on Korean cultural heritage research projects with overseas institutions and researchers.

NRICH is a national institution in charge of comprehensive research related to cultural heritage, and this year marks its 51st anniversary. For the past half-century, to preserve and utilize Korean cultural properties, it has undertaken projects at the national level and is actively engaged in joint research and exchanges with various domestic and international organizations.

Compared to these domestic and overseas activities, there is a lack of media that promote cultural heritage research achievements abroad. "NRICH" was published in the form of an English magazine so that people around the world can access the news more quickly and easily.

"NRICH" showcases the significant research achievements in a column format along with photos so that non-professionals can easily understand. There are ten columns with six main articles on research projects that have produced remarkable achievements in each field in the past ten years and topics that can raise interest in cultural heritage.

The main articles include research on the following: the research of the Silla tumuli in the Jjoksaem district of Gyeongju from 2007 to the present; the research on the restoration of the manufacturing technology of big jar coffins, which gives a glimpse into the ancient society of the Yeongsan River basin; the results of joint research efforts with overseas institutions such as Mongolia and Kazakhstan; the results of comprehensive academic research on the Royal Tombs of Joseon, a World Heritage Site; the details of the restoration and maintenance of the Stone Pagoda at Mireuksaji in Iksan that lasted for 20 years; the conservation treatment of the Stupa of State Preceptor Jigwang from Beopcheonsa Temple Site, Wonju, National Treasure No. 101, which was carried out for five years. The articles are written by researchers responsible for each research project.

In addition, the magazine introduces the following topical columns: the excavation of Bihwa Gaya tombs that were not looted where numerous jewelry were excavated which lead to significant interest from academia; scientific monitoring of cultural heritage in preparation for 'disasters,' which is an important issue around the world; scientific research on scenic sites of 'Bogildo Island Garden'; the characteristics of the gold thread used in traditional Korean costumes.
   

The National Institute of Cultural Heritage distributes "NRICH" free of charge to foreign embassies, cultural centers, and international organizations in Korea and major museums, research institutes, universities, and Korean cultural centers abroad. The magazine will be published online on the institute website (www.nrich.go.kr/www.nrich.go.kr/english) for free public access.

The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage of CHA plans to promptly and accurately share the latest research information in the field of cultural heritage by publishing twice a year in the first and second half of each year, starting with the first issue of  "NRICH".

 

 

국립문화재연구소, 영문잡지『NRICH』(엔알아이씨에이치) 창간호 발행
- 최신 문화재 연구 성과와 문화유산 소식 국내외 소개 / 11.30. 발행 -

문화재청 국립문화재연구소(소장 지병목)는 해외 기관과 우리 연구진들의 성과와 한국의 문화유산 연구사업의 최신 소식을 공유하기 위한 영문잡지『NRICH』(엔알아이씨에이치) 창간호를 지난 11월 30일 발행하였다.

국립문화재연구소는 문화유산과 관련된 종합 연구를 담당하고 있는 문화재청 소속 국가 연구기관으로 올해 개소 51주년을 맞이하였다. 지난 반세기동안 우리 문화재를 보존ㆍ활용하기 위하여 국가적 차원의 사업을 도맡아 수행하였으며 국내외 여러 기관과 활발하게 교류하며 공동연구를 하고 있다.
  
이번 영문판 잡지 창간을 계기로, 연구소는 다양하고 활발한 대내외 활동과 우리 문화유산 연구 성과를 보다 빠르게 해외에 홍보하고, 쉽게 소식을 전할 수 있게 될 것으로 보인다. 주요 연구 성과를 사진자료와 함께 사설 형식으로 담아 비전공자도 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 하였으며, 특히, 이번 창간호에는 최근 10년 동안 분야별로 괄목할 만한 성과를 도출한 연구 사업에 대한 6편의 주요 기사와 우리 문화유산에 대한 흥미를 돋우는 주제 등을 선별해 총 10편의 성과를 담았다.
 
주요 기사로는 2007년부터 지금까지 진행되어온 ▲ 경주 쪽샘 지구의 신라 고분유적에 대한 조사 내용, ▲ 영산강 유역의 고대사회상을 엿볼 수 있는 대형옹관의 제작기술 복원에 관한 연구를 소개하였으며, ▲ 몽골·카자흐스탄 등 국외 기관과의 공동연구 성과도 소개하였다. 또한, 세계문화유산인 ▲ 조선 왕릉의 종합 학술조사연구 성과와 20년에 걸쳐 이루어진 ▲ 익산 미륵사지 석탑의 보수 정비 내용과 5년 간 걸쳐 수행되어온 ▲ 국보 제101호 원주 법천사지 지광국사탑의 보존처리 내용 등을 자세히 소개하였다.


이외에도 ▲도굴된 적 없는 가야 지배층의 장신구가 무더기로 출토되어 최근 학계의 관심이 집중되었던 비화가야 고분군의 발굴조사 내용과 ▲ 세계적으로 중요한 주제인 ‘재난’에 대비한 문화재의 과학적 상시점검(모니터링) 내용, ▲ 한국의 명승인 ‘보길도 원림’을 대상으로 과학적인 명승 조사 연구, ▲ 한국 전통 복식에 사용된 금사(金絲)의 특징을 소개하였다. 집필진은 각 연구 사업의 책임연구진이 작성하였다.

 

국립문화재연구소는『NRICH』를 국내의 주한 외국대사관과 문화원, 국제기구와 해외의 주요 박물관, 연구소, 한국학 개설대학과 한국문화원 등에 무료로 배포하고, 국립문화재연구소 누리집(국문 www.nrich.go.kr/영문 www.nrich.go.kr/english)에도 공개하여 누구나 열람할 수 있도록 할 예정이다.

 

문화재청 국립문화재연구소는 이번『NRICH』창간호를 시작으로 매년 상반기와 하반기 연 2회, 6개월 간격으로 발행해 문화유산 분야 최신 연구 정보를 전 세계에 신속하고 정확하게 공유할 계획이다.
