Tomb of King Sinmun in Gyeongju

This is presumed to be the tomb of King Sinmun, the 31st ruler of the Silla kingdom. He was the eldest son of King Munmu who unified the three Kingdoms. King Sinmun firmly established royal absolitism, improving the government, and promoting national studies by sstablishing a national institute to train future lsaders. 

The round earthen mound is 92m in circumference and 30m in diameter and 7.6m in height. Five layers of brick-shaped rocks surround the base of the mound. Positioned at rather short intervals are store pillars to support the stone structure around the base and tomb itself.

능은 신라 제31대 신문왕(神文王, 재위 681~692. 본명 김정명)을 모신 곳으로, 경주 동남쪽 낭산(狼山) 남쪽 끝에 위치한다. 능은 둥글게 흙을 쌓은 원형 봉토분으로 밑둘레 92m, 지름 29m, 높이 7.6m다. 밑둘레에 벽돌 모양으로 다듬은 돌을 5단으로 쌓은 뒤 사다리 꼴로 생긴 44개 보호석을 설치했다. 동쪽에는 크고 긴 돌로 쌓은 상석이 있다. 신문왕은 문무왕(文武王) 맏아들로 문무왕 뜻을 이어받아 옛 백제와 고구려 백성을 융합하는데 힘썼고, 국학(國學)을 두어 인재를 양성하였다.
