환유첩, 알짜뺀 지방만 떠돈 어느 조선관리의 지도 일기

 

추억을 얹은 지도책, 환유첩宦遊帖

훌쩍 지나가 버린 인생의 소중한 나날들을 돌이켜보면서 자신의 삶을 긍정하고 또 의미를 부여하려는 것은 모든 이들의 소박한 바람일 것입니다.

사람들은 저마다 조금은 다른 방식으로 자신의 삶을 추억합니다.

여기 한 권의 지도책이 있습니다.

조선왕조의 관리로서 여러 고을의 원님을 지냈던 홍기주(洪岐周, 1829~?)는 그가 거쳤던 14개 고을 지도를 모아 한 권의 책으로 묶었습니다.

경상도 용궁부터, 전라도 순창, 함경도 함흥, 전라도 곡성, 전주, 무주, 강원도 평강, 충청도 온양, 경상도 거창, 전라도 고산, 평안도 순안, 경상도 안의, 황해도 신천, 충청도 천안까지.

그가 근무한 여러 고을 생생한 모습이 다채롭게 지도에 담겨 있습니다.

지도에 표시된 동헌에, 누각에, 성벽에, 물줄기에, 그리고 여러 지명에 그가 보낸 소중한 시간의 추억이 이어져 있을 것입니다.

지도는 공간 속을 살다간 이들이 펼쳐낸 수많은 기대와 희망, 그리고 걱정과 한숨을 담습니다.

홍기주는 그 위에 평생의 추억을 얹었습니다.

Hwanyucheop: A Map Book Filled with Memories
Everyone shares a humble wish to reflect on the precious days that have slipped by, embrace their lives, and find meaning in them. People remember their lives in their own ways. This is a map book by Hong Giju (洪岐周, 1829-?), a government official in the Joseon Dynasty who served as the magistrate in many counties. He compiled this book by collecting the maps of the fourteen counties where he served, including Yonggung (Gyeongsang-do), Sunchang (Jeolla-do), Hamheung (Hamgyeong-do), Gokseong (Jeolla-do), Jeonju (Jeolla-do), Muju (Jeolla-do), Pyeonggang (Gangwon-do), Onyang (Chungcheong-do), Geochang (Gyeongsang-do), Gosan (Jeolla-do), Sunan (Pyeongan-do), Anui (Gyeongsang-do), Sincheon (Hwanghae-do), and Cheonan (Chungcheong-do). The maps vividly depict the diverse towns where he served. The memories of the precious time he spent are kept in the magistrate’s offices, pavilions, fortress walls, streams, and the many places marked on the maps. A map holds the countless expectations, hopes, worries, and sighs of those who once lived within those spaces. Upon these maps, Hong Giju placed his lifetime memories.
