문수산 중턱에 자리한 이 절은 백제 의자왕 4년(644)에 자장율사慈裝律師가 당나라에서 문수보살의 뜻을 깨닫고 귀국한 후 세웠다고 전하지만 신라 승려가 백제시대에 백제 땅에 사찰을 세웠다는 말을 어찌 받아들에야 할지 모르겠다.

오랜 세월이 흐르는 동안 허물어진 것을 조선 효종 4년(1653)과 영조 40년(1764)에 다시 지어 오늘에 이른다.

경내에는 대웅전 외에도 문수천, 명부전, 만세루, 금륜전
등이 있으며, 성오와 상유스님 등의 사리를 모신 부도군이 있다.

보물 제1918호인 고창 문수사 목조석가여래삼불좌상을 모신 대웅전은 문수사 본전으로, 축조연대가 명확하지 않지만 고종 13년 (1876)에 고창현감 김성로의 시주로 북암대사가 다시 지었다고 한다.

앞면 3칸, 옆면 3칸의 작은 건물이면서도 지붕 처마를
받치면서 장식을 위해 만든 공포가 기둥 위와 기둥 사이에도 배치된 다포양식 건물이다.

지붕 옆면이 사람 인人자 모양인 맞배지붕집으로, 다포계 건물에 맞배지붕을 올린 점이 특이하다.

Munsusa Temple, located on the middle slope of Munsusan Mountain, was established in 644 by Dharma Master Jajang (ca. 590~658) after
his return from Tang China, where he had learned about the vows of Manjusri Bodhisattva.

Thereafter the temple gradually deteriorated over the
centuries until major renovation works were carried out in 1653 and 1764.

The temple consists of several prayer halls, including Munsujeon, Myeongbujeon, Manseru and Geumnyunjeon, and a complex of stupas enshrining the relics of the eminent monks, including Seongo and Sangyu, who died at the temple.

No one knows exactly when the temple's main prayer hall, Daeungjeon, now enshrining the Wooden
Seated Sakyamuni Buddha Triad(Treasure No.1918) was originally built.

The current building is known to have been built in 1876 under the patronage of Kim Seong-ro, then administrative chief of Gochang-hyeon, when the temple was headed by the monk Mugam.

The hall is a comparatively small three-kan by three-kan structure characterized by decorative bracket clusters placed not just on the top of the columns
but between them, and a gable roof.

The combination of a gable roof and the multiple bracket cluster style is regarded as a unique case.
