벼룩에서 사랑을 빨아낸 괴기의 시인 존 던 John DONNE

존 던

벼룩과 관련한 영시 한 편을 소개하고자 한다.

작자는 셰익스피이나 세르반테스와 활동 연대가 대략 같은 JOHN DONNE.

1571년 혹은 그 이듬해 태어나서 1631년에 갔다.

셰익스피어보다 대략 10년 늦게 나서 대략 10년 나중에 갔다.

donne는 '던'이라 발음한다.

누구를 위하여 교회 조종을 울리냐 for whom the bell tolls 라는 훌륭한 설교를 해댄 목사 시인이다.

아래 전문을 소개하거니와

하도 노골적이라 전문을 옮기기엔 그러해서

다음 첫 구절만 주시하면 된다.

It sucked me first, and now sucks thee,
And in this flea our two bloods mingled be;  

베루기가 나를 먼저 빨고 지금은 당신을 빨자나요?

그러니 이 베루기 배때지엔 우리 두 사람 피가 섞였자나요?

그러니 이런 베루기를 죽이지 말라 한다.

suck는 아다시피 sexual connotation으로 점철한 포르노 용어다.

애초엔 아이가 엄마 젓을 빠는 행위를 의미하지만 이 경우는 상상에 맡긴다.

존 던이 주도한 이 시대 시풍을 흔히 형이상학파 시 metaphysical poetry 라 하거니와

왜 이런 이름이 나중에 붙었는지, 이 시가 유감없이 증명한다.

간단히 메타피지컬 포우임은 괴기스럽다.

참고로 저 메타피지컬 운운은 훗날 문학사가들이 붙인 명칭이라 실상 메타피직스랑은 관계없고 괴기주의로 점철한다.

억지성 비유가 많다.

여기서 사랑이 나오나?

The Flea

Mark but this flea, and mark in this,  
How little that which thou deniest me is;  
It sucked me first, and now sucks thee,
And in this flea our two bloods mingled be;  
Thou know’st that this cannot be said
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead,
    Yet this enjoys before it woo,
    And pampered swells with one blood made of two,
    And this, alas, is more than we would do.

Oh stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Where we almost, nay more than married are.  
This flea is you and I, and this
Our mariage bed, and marriage temple is;  
Though parents grudge, and you, w'are met,  
And cloistered in these living walls of jet.
    Though use make you apt to kill me,
    Let not to that, self-murder added be,
    And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Purpled thy nail, in blood of innocence?  
Wherein could this flea guilty be,
Except in that drop which it sucked from thee?  
Yet thou triumph’st, and say'st that thou  
Find’st not thy self, nor me the weaker now;
    ’Tis true; then learn how false, fears be:
    Just so much honor, when thou yield’st to me,
    Will waste, as this flea’s death took life from thee.
