목판으로 찍어낸 오래된 제주 지도입니다.

표제에는 제주도濟州圖라 했습니다.

백록담 물줄기가 ‘수분처水分處’에서 갈라져 한 줄기는 산지천이 되고, 한 줄기는 화북천이 되었습니다. 

지도는 한라산을 배경으로 제주읍성을 크게 그리고, 대정과 정의는 글씨로 방향만 표시했습니다.

지도의 서북쪽 끝은 한천 너머 도두봉입니다.

오늘날 제주공항에 이어져 있지요. 동북쪽 끝은 별도봉과 화북입니다.

조선시대 제주 사람들이 생각한 제주읍의 영역은 이 정도 공간이었나 봅니다. 

이 작은 지도에 삼성혈과 삼사석은 유난히 크게 그렸습니다.

전라도 남원에 정착한 제주 양씨들은 남원 양씨가 되어 족보를 만들었습니다.

족보에 실린 목판본 제주 지도는 이 <제주읍성도>와 거의 같은 모습입니다.

양을나의 이야기가 깃든 탐라의 유적이야말로 이 지도를 만든 사람들이 가장 중요하게 여겼던 가문의 뿌리였을 것입니다.


This early 18th-century map of Jeju was made through woodblock printing.

Water is shown flowing out of Baengnokdam, the crater lake at the peak of Halla Mountain.  

The characters 水分處mark the place where the river divides into two courses, becoming Sanjicheon and Hwabukcheon.

The map is drawn with north at the bottom.

It focuses on the walled town of Jeju and only indicates the direction in which the island's other two walled towns are to be found: Daejeong to the west and Jeongui to the east. Dodubong is drawn to the west of Jeju, at the far right of the map, across the river called Hancheon.

This is near the present-day location of Jeju International Airport.

You can see Byeoldobong and Hwabuk to the east of Jeju.

These features show people's understanding of the extent of the administrative district of Jeju-eup during the Joseon dynasty.  

Samseonghyeol, the legendary birthplace of the three demi-gods believed to have founded the nation of Tamna, and Samsaseok, which are rocks believed to have been struck by their arrows, are drawn quite large relative to the size of the map. 

The Yang clan of Jeju is said to be descended from one of the demi-gods, and the emphasis on these mythico-historical sites indicates the clan's involvement in the map's creation.

A nearly identical woodblock printed map appears in the genealogical record book of the branch of the Jeju Yang clan that moved to the mainland and settled in Namwon in Jeolla Province.
