The National Museum of Korea (Director-General:Yoon SungYong) is presenting an exhibition entitled Astana Tombs – A House of Eternity at the Central Asia Gallery located on the third floor of the Permanent Exhibition Hall starting on July 16, 2022.

The exhibition was organized to present to the public the achievements of a survey conducted on artifacts from the Astana tombs (阿斯塔那古墓) in the museum’s Central Asia collection.

The exhibited objects were collected by the Otani (大谷) expedition in the early 20th century from the Astana tombs.

The Astana tombs were a ruling class cemetery constructed near the ancient capital city of Gaochang (高昌故城), where the old castle remains are located in the southeast of the Turpan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China.

Over 400 tombs have been discovered through the early 20th century expeditions headed by the Western powers to the Silk Road and the numerous excavations conducted by the Xinjiang Museum in China since 1959.

A wide variety of tomb furnishings have been found in very good condition, including paintings of Fuxi and Nüwa (伏羲女媧圖), figurines, pottery, and documents, which provides abundant material for the research on the museum’s Astana tomb collections.

This exhibition arranged the artifacts as they were placed at the excavation site: main chamber, side rooms, and passageway.

The Painting of Fuxi and Nüwa (Fig. 1), the largest among the three versions in the museum collection, is presented with a life-size reproduction hanging on the ceiling of the gallery to provide viewers with an idea of the atmosphere inside a tomb.

The appearance of two divinities, Fuxi and Nüwa, as the upper body of a human and the lower body of a snake symbolizes the birth of the universe and all living things.

The painting was originally located at the ceiling of the main chamber, reflecting the desire for the deceased to be reborn and lead an abundant existence in the afterlife.

The Pottery Painted with Pearl Design and Wooden Trays Used as Funerary Objects (Fig. 2) are also exhibited in a set referencing the list of items and photographs from the time of the museum’s acquisition in 1916.

Among the tomb figurines, Figurine of Warrior Riding a Horse (Figs. 3, 4) was restored by reassembling fragments, and its original production methods were revealed through a CT (computed tomography) scan.

It is hoped that the exhibition will provide visitors with an opportunity to better understand the wishes of the people of the time who hoped that life in this world would continue even after death by meeting artifacts of Turpan Astana tombs, the underground time capsule from 1,300 years ago.

이상은 국립중앙박물관이 중국 신장위구르 지역 저명한 고대 공동묘지인 아스타나 고분군이라는 데서 수습하고서는 지금은 국박에서 소장 중인 관련 유물들로 코너를 새로 꾸몄다는 소식을 국박이 정리해 배포한 영문보도자료다.

물론 그에 해당하는 한국어 보도자료는 별도로 있어, 이 영문판은 그것을 직역한 판이다.

근자 국박 보도자료 배포시스템을 보면 으레 저런 소식은 영문보도자료를 첨부하곤 한다.

저리 하니 어떤 데가 좋은가 하면,

첫째 그 보도자료를 그대로 국박 영문판에 써먹을 수 있고,

둘째, 관련 소식을 즉각즉각 해외로 타전하며,

셋째, 이와 관련한 뉴스가 즉각즉각 만들어져 해외로 판로를 개척해 나간다는 점들을 꼽을 수 있겠다.

실제로 저리 하니 나처럼 영문뉴스로 해외 시장에 장사하려는 사람들한테는 그 도움이 얼마나 큰지 모른다. 나뿐인가? 저리 하니 다른 국내 영자지들이 그리 좋다고 한댄다.

저와 같은 서비스는 이제는 해외 시장을 염두에 두어야 한다. 그럴 만한 국력이 되었고, 저와 같은 작은 일들이 씨앗이 되어 훗날 어떤 열매로 결실할지 누가 알겠는가?

나는 매양 우리 문화재업계를 향해 이제 국내용 마스터베이션을 그만해야 한다고 강조하곤 한다. 맨날맨날 한글로만 소개해서 무얼하겠는가? 영어로 쓰서 영어로 팔아먹어야 한다.

내가 사대주의자이기 때문이겠는가? 영어는 세계 공용어다. 그 공용어에 한국역사문화 콘텐츠를 실어 팔아먹어야 한다.

저와 같은 영문자료 서비스가 이전에도 없었던 것은 아니지만, 적어도 제도로 정착하는 데는 내가 했다. 다른 어떤 놈이 이런 일을 했으며, 어떤 놈이 이런 일의 중요성을 설파했겠는가? 오직 김태식이가 있을 뿐이다.

국박에 앞서 나는 관련 사업 규모가 훨씬 더 크고, 관련 소식도 훨씬 광범위한 문화재청에 대해 저와 같은 서비스를 요청했으니, 여전히 확고히 정착한 단계는 아니지만, 그런 대로 착근하기 시작해서 이제 문화재청발 주요한 문화재 관련 소식들은 영문서비스가 동시에 탑재되곤 하는 모습을 보인다.

다만 여전히 문화재청에서 아쉬운 대목은 국립문화재연구원으로 간판을 바꾼 국립문화재연구소라, 이짝에서는 여전히 주요한 소식들이 한글로만 집중 서비스되는 경향을 본다.

김연수가 근자 그 원장으로 갔으니, 그 자리 발령받자마자 나는 김연수한테 이 문제를 지적하면서 "앞으로 모든 연구원발 보도자료는 영문서비스를 개시하라"고 요청했다.

그런가 하면 국립고궁박물관은 웬간하면 영문보도자료가 첨부된다. 이렇게 내가 바꾼 시점은 정재숙 청장 시절이었다.

다만 다시 말하지만, 아직 그 중요성 중대성을 문화재청 직원들이 여전히 인지하지 못한 느낌이 커서 이 부문에 대한 더욱 강력한 통제가 있어야 한다고 본다.

이를 시발로 나는 똑같은 요구를 국립박물관과 국립민속박물관에도 했다. 이 두 기관 요즘 서비스를 보면 영문보도자료가 으레 첨부됨을 본다.

이 움직임에서 주목할 데는 국박이라, 나는 이런 요청을 일전에 윤성용 당시 학예실장한테 했다. 뭐할 거냐? 국박이 맨날맨날 마스터베이션만 할 거냐? 아니지 않느냐? 이젠 세계로 나아가 장사해야지 않겠는가? 국박이 언제까지나 세계화세계화라 하면서 왜놈 몇 놈만 불러다가 그걸로 세계화라 하는가? 왜 영문자료를 서비스하지 않는가?

그의 대답은 실로 간단 명료했다. "알았다" 이거 한 마디였다.

이후 어떻게 진행되는지 나는 몰랐다. 어느 때 다시 전화할 일이 있어 이런저런 얘기를 나누는데 그가 하는 말이 "아니 영문서비스하라 말하더니만 정작 영문자료를 내는데 왜 연합에서는 써 주지 않느냐"고 하는 게 아닌가?

직후 확인하니, 내가 저리 요청한 직후 국박 모든 보도자료는 영문서비스를 개시 중이었다.

"아이고 미안하다 몰랐다" 하고는 이후 국박에서 나오는 거의 모든 소식은 영문으로 소개하려 하는 중이며, 그래서 저 아스타나고분군 전시 소식도 저 영문보도자료를 토대로 삼아 아래와 같이 소개했다.

한류 그 핵심은 BTS가 아니라 한국의 역사문화 콘텐츠 그 자체임을 잊어서는 안 된다.

문화재청이나 박물관 미술관은 그걸 팔아먹어야 한다.
